Aotearoa should not allow tracking solutions to enter the market to begin with. Early acceptance, however limited, could enable them to slowly capture the market.
One
FED is being removed
Tax included in fuel will be removed, reducing fuel prices by 70c per litre.
Two
RUC is replacing it
A universal charge of ~7.6c per kilometre will be introduced for everyone, not just diesel and electric vehicles.
Three
RUC providers
Private companies will record vehicle distance automatically, creating an effortless, invisible system.
Aotearoa is leading.
A larger economy means there is more to go around.
Holstegge Technologies believes privacy is essential to a fair and accessible Road User Charges system. Providers should limit themselves to solutions that do not track location, and work to maximise the value they bring to customers within the confines of that constraint.
A social requirement
Tax restricts individuals' freedoms, so should compensate in accessibility.
Protecting individuals
Accessibility means protecting the rights of individuals.
Privacy as a right
As an unfortunate social requirement, tax should not reduce people's right to privacy.
Under the new system, drivers will choose how their distance is recorded. Some options will be fully automated, like GPS devices, OBD plug-ins, and connected vehicle systems, but are based on tracking where you drive. Other options, like odometer photos, will keep your location private but become a real monthly-hastle.
Distance logging becomes mandatory
As the new tax system is based on distance travelled by the car, monitoring the car odometer will become mandatory.
Odometer photos allow privacy
Odometer photographs will be permitted in the new system, so drivers will have a privacy-focused way to record their distance.
Odometer photos are inconvenient
Regular odometer photographs are inconvenient, and will leave customers non-compliant during long-distance trips.
Our hardware is built for convenience
The Kiwimetre Tag replaces odometer photographs and removes long-distance compliance risk while still maintaining privacy.
